The curiosity rover NASA has sent us a slew of photos of Mars since its landing in 2012. In this bank of more than 900,000 postcards, one of the most recent shows a virtual “door” embedded in a mountain on the Red Planet.
This shot was taken on May 7 with two NavCam cameras on the mast of the six-wheeled robot. The location is the region of Mars known as Greenhough Fronton.

The image was also posted as a file Panoramic composition and color on the GigaPan platform.
Although the image has not been featured by the US space agency, it sparked great intrigue among netizens, who theorized for a supposed Martian society that would have perfectly carved rocks.

What is the enigmatic “Mars door”?
One of the most successful explanations that have been offered on social networks for the formation of the “door to Mars” is possible sternum fracture. This process can occur as an effect of pressure in the rock after rock movements.
NASA’s Insight lander has revealed that earthquakes on Mars are more common than previously thought. The heaviest ever recorded occurred on May 4 and could have been greater than 5 degrees.
However, we do not have accurate information yet that this geological structure was caused by one of the earthquakes that were recently recorded.
This isn’t the first time we’ve observed objects on Mars that are reminiscent of Earth.
On February 25, Curiosity recorded a flower-shaped rock. In this case, software engineer Kevin M. Gill has argued that it could be rock that was eroded by winds over billions of years.

It may also be the case that Curiosity’s picture is not entirely accurate to reality and that the alleged door is a perspective error. The best example of this is the “hut” on the moon recorded by the Chinese rover Yutu-2, which eventually turned into a small boulder.
