Meta will share more data about political campaign ads with researchers

Meta announced that it will begin sharing more data about political, electoral and social campaign ads displayed on Facebook with academic researchers to study their impact on society.

The researchers will have access to the individual data of each ad posted on the social network and will include detailed information such as the interest categories that advertisers have chosen to direct to users.

Facebook’s parent company clarified that the information will be available at the end of this month, according to Progress in a statement. To access it, researchers must be within the Facebook Open Research and Transparency (FORT) program.

Meta states that FORT was created to allow qualified researchers to analyze the impact of the platform on society. In addition, it emphasizes that it includes measures to protect the privacy of users who use the social network.

The company notes that this initiative is an extension of the experiment launched in 2021 that provided information on political, electoral and social campaign ads for the 2020 US elections. However, the sample only collected data from the three months prior to the elections. .

With its new proposal, Meta promises access to all ads posted on the platform globally, from August 2020 onwards.

Meta will also update the Ad Library, the portal that collects all ads shown on the Meta Services. As of next July, it will include a summary of ad data posted after its launch.

This service update will include new data about the number of ads displayed on the page based on different breakdowns, such as location, demographics or user interests, as well as the money spent on each of these options.

Finally, this summary will also show if the page is using the Custom Audiences tool, or Similar Audiences, to access more information.

Facebook’s parent company adds that all of this information will be available in those countries where the ad transparency tools and disclaimers currently apply.
