Russia closes its airspace to airlines from Poland, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic

Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatia, announced on Saturday that Russia has banned airlines from Poland, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic from flying over its territory. This is presumably in response to similar actions by these countries towards Russian airlines.

Flights from Poland, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic will be carried out only on the basis of a special permit from Russia or the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The authority said that this was a response to the actions of those countries that banned the entry into their territories of planes registered in Russia or used by Russian airlines.

Poland, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria closed their airspace to all Russian aircraft on Friday. Latvia and Estonia did so on Saturday.

Ban Russian carriers

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced, from midnight, Friday to Saturday, a ban on entering Polish airspace for aircraft used by airlines from Russia. This relates to the Cabinet’s regulation of air traffic bans.

It is related to the Cabinet Regulation issued on February 25, 2022 regarding the ban on air traffic, which was published before midnight from Friday to Saturday in the Laws Journal. The regulation entered into force the day after its issuance. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Friday ordered the preparation of a government decision on closing the airspace over Poland to Russian Airlines.

The Civil Aviation Authority announced on its website that the regulation prohibits entry into Polish airspace for aircraft used by air carriers from Russia. The ban does not apply to aircraft flying a HUM (a flight of an aircraft engaged in humanitarian action).
