Surfer Kai McKenzie, 23, survived a shark attack but lost his leg.
Then the leg floated to the shore after the bloody drama.
Doctors now hope to be able to stitch it back together.
Kai McKenzie, 23, was surfing in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia, on Tuesday.
There he was violently attacked by a shark.
Dressing up using a dog leash
Mackenzie was able to defend himself and escape, but the shark bit his right leg.
He must have caught a wave and let it sweep him to the shore where several people were able to help him.
According to witness accounts from the scene, an off-duty police officer was able to use a dog leash to apply a bandage and thus stop the bleeding.
Local media reported that the surfer's leg later floated to shore and could be cared for by people at the scene.
Kai McKenzie was initially treated at a local hospital, but a short time later an ambulance helicopter arrived and recovered him and his right leg.
They were then airlifted to a major emergency hospital.
Three-meter-long great white shark
Doctors at the hospital are now investigating whether it is possible to sew the leg back together.
Kai McKenzie's injuries are considered very serious, but are no longer life-threatening.
According to local media, the surfer is suspected of having been attacked by a three-metre-long great white shark.
Kai McKenzie has suffered serious injuries in the past during his surfing career. He is said to have recently returned to the sport after suffering a serious neck injury.
