According to witness accounts from the scene, an off-duty police officer was able to use a dog leash to apply a bandage and thus stop the bleeding.

Local media reported that the surfer's leg later floated to shore and could be cared for by people at the scene.

Kai McKenzie was initially treated at a local hospital, but a short time later an ambulance helicopter arrived and recovered him and his right leg.

They were then airlifted to a major emergency hospital.

The great white shark that attacked Kay Mackenzie was three metres long. The photo shows a 1.2 metre great white shark in the aquarium.
