OnePlus has announced the end of updates for two smartphones. Software support for OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T is ending, and both phones will no longer receive any updates. This move may not come as a surprise, but the OnePlus 6T in particular leaves a bitter aftertaste.
OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T will no longer receive updates
If you still have a OnePlus 6 or OnePlus 6T in your pocket, you should start looking for a replacement. Both smartphones have now reached “EOL”, that is, the end of their life. The Chinese factory allows Software support has expired and will not provide updates for OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T (Those: OnePlus Forum). So the devices will remain running OxygenOS 11, which is based on Android 11. There will be no update to Android 12 anymore, and there will be no security updates.
“After three major Android updates and more than three years of public updates,” a OnePlus employee says on the manufacturer’s forum, it’s now time to end this chapter. OnePlus would like to thank the community, without which support would not have been possible. The manufacturer also sends a special thank you to the beta testers.
Of course, the same goes for software updates: everything is relative. Compared to Realme Pad, which doesn’t even get a single Android update, OnePlus has done well in OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T. Since its release in 2018, OnePlus smartphones have received Three major Android updates and countless security updates. The end of the now announced updates for the two devices can be accepted with a shrug of the shoulders – business as usual in the Android world, one might think.
Two OnePlus smartphones will have to do without innovations in Android 12:
OnePlus promises three years of Android updates and four years of security updates
On the other hand Manufacturers like Apple and, more recently, Samsung show how things can be done differently. What a cry it would be if Apple ended software support for the iPhone Xs – unimaginable. Just like the OnePlus 6T, it was launched at the end of 2018 and is supposed to receive the next or even three iOS updates.
After all, OnePlus is able to learn: in July last year, the group announced that To give new OnePlus models three major Android updates and four years of security updates in the future. The innovation will take effect for the first time in the OnePlus 8 series from 2020.
