UD warning of rocks
More than ten thousand earthquakes were recently recorded in Iceland in the past few days. The strongest attack occurred on Sunday evening, with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale.
Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ travel guide, the Swedish Embassy in Iceland writes that travelers on the Reykjanes Peninsula should use caution on steep cliffs, near steep sea cliffs and avoid areas where rocks can collapse.
Air Traffic 2010
In April 2010, a volcanic eruption occurred in the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, which paralyzed air traffic in northern Europe. The reason was that the ash from the volcano was spread so widely that large clouds of ash were formed that were not safe to fly through.
According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), Iceland’s counterpart to SMHI, there are no indications of such a thing happening in the affected area now.
– The last volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Gildadaler in 2021 caused no air traffic problems either here or anywhere else, says Einar Horlevsson of the IMO.
