Last weekend, the first full commercial mission to the International Space Station (ISS) was launched. On board the Falcon 9 rocket, four astronauts began a 10-day stay in space, during which scientific experiments will be conducted.
SpaceX and Axiom Space have jointly carried out the first-ever commercial mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Its first stage returned to Earth and landed on a floating platform called Deficiency in Gravitas in the Atlantic Ocean.
All stages of the described flight passed without unnecessary complications. The trip to the station took about 21 hours. The crew of the Ax-1 arrived safely at the International Space Station on April 9 at 14:29 Polish time thanks to the Dragon 2 capsule quest. After the successful docking, the astronomers began a stay of at least 8 days on the International Space Station.
The members of the Ax-1 mission consisted of three tourists (Larry Connor – mission pioneer, owner of Connor Real Estate Group Inc., Mark Bathy and Eitan Stepper – mission specialists, and professional investors) who had paid to participate in the event after $55 million and a former professional astronaut in the NASA (he left the Astronaut Corps in 2012) and is now Axiom Vice President Michael Lopez Alegria, who serves as mission leader.
The crew on the International Space Station set scientific and educational goals, which consist in conducting 25 experiments related, among other things, to studying the effect of space flight on aging cells, on the condition of the heart, on the tissues of the heart and brain. In total, they will devote 100 hours to these tasks. In addition, a number of commercial, informational and promotional activities will be carried out.
The event was the sixth manned mission by SpaceX and 37 orbital flights in the current calendar year. Another commercial mission from Axiom, confirmed by NASA, is scheduled to begin in early 2023.
