Washington–Organizers canceled the New York Auto Show that was scheduled for later this month on Wednesday amid an increase in COVID-19 cases caused by the more contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus.
The 10-day public viewing and press previews that were scheduled to begin on August 19th generally attract thousands of journalists from around the world and more than one million ticket buyers.
The return of the show, which was later than originally scheduled in April 2021, was announced in June.
Organizers said Wednesday that the program “has been canceled due to increased cases of the COVID-19 Delta virus and an increase in measures recently announced by state and local officials to stop its spread.”
The show, which takes place at the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, was last held in April 2019 and is usually used by major automakers to introduce new cars. Thousands of potential car buyers use car deals to help make buying decisions.
The 2020 fair was canceled at the time when the Javits Center was being used as a temporary hospital.
Organizers plan to hold the next New York Auto Show in April 2022.
Organizers said the fair usually generates more than $300 million for the region’s economy.
