Married couple from Michigan, Hailey and Trevor Gilmartin, bought a house on Lake Huron in the US four years ago. However, it was in desperate need of renovation.

– Hayley says all the furnishings date back to the 1970s Newsweek.

The couple agreed to get rid of anything you wouldn't expect to immediately find in the living room.

There was a non-working Jacuzzi in the middle of the living room, and fixing it would take a lot of work, Hayley says.

But when they tore down the Jacuzzi, they were amazed at what was underneath. There was a big, deep hole there.

Find a secret room

When Hayley and Trevor made their way down the hole, they discovered a secret room filled with water.

“We live near Lake Huron and discovered that the room is connected to the lake via a pipe,” says Hayley.

This is because the house was previously used as a pumping station.

– Hayley says the wildest theory we've heard is that the room was used during Prohibition to smuggle alcohol out of Canada.

“Many bottles from the Prohibition era were found.”

Between 1920 and 1933, there was a complete ban on intoxicating alcoholic beverages throughout the United States. This period is called the ban period. During Prohibition, criminals used Lake Huron to smuggle alcohol into the United States from Canada. According to experts, 75 percent of the alcohol smuggled into the country comes through the Lake Huron region.

“In fact, we found many Prohibition-era bottles in the area where we live,” Haley says.

Aside from the water, the room was basically empty.

“If it works, we'll pump the water out and build a bowling alley or hobby room there,” Haley says.
