Like last week in Dallas, Adrian Mannarino lost to American Riley Opelka (7-6 .). [2]3-6, 6-1), Friday in the championship quarterfinals in Delray Beach, Florida.
If the French player, ranked No. 7 and 53 in the world, this time around, resists three rounds against the tournament winner in 2020, he may feel remorse, at the end of a match filled with several moments of tension caused by his opponent in court.
Car headlights and music…
After losing the first set in the tiebreak, Opelka’s serve made the difference (total of 19 aces), Mannarino upped his game in the second set, and managed to score the first half to lead 2-0. A little earlier, during this game, the American logically asked to turn off the headlights of the car, displaying them on a corner of the stadium, which inexplicably appeared.
Then throughout the tour he complained about some loud music, coming from outside the fence. Meanwhile, Mannarino managed to maintain his advantage, and tied with one set.
At the beginning of the third set, while Opelka continued to show signs of tension, sometimes attacking the audience or complaining to the referee, Mannarino lost the rhythm and thread of the match, and conceded his serve from the ‘entry’.
Penalty point against Mannarino
He even scored a surprise penalty point for him. Banned and disappointed, he didn’t bother returning the opposing service at the next point. And Opelka to escape the score to win in just over two hours.
He will face the American-Australian John Millman on Saturday, who beat Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (6-4, 6-4). The other semi-final match will face Britain’s Cameron Norrie, the number 1 seed American Tommy Ball.
