Telefónica and Idemia, security and cryptography specialists, have implemented a successful pilot project to improve the privacy of user communications using a SIM card to which the Quantom-Safe 5G secure element is applied to protect it from future attacks using quantum technology.
In this way, the operator is preparing for the emergence of this new technology that threatens to make some of the algorithms used at risk, as explained in a statement on Tuesday.
The developed card allows that when the mobile phone sends signals to the 5G network, a unique ID code is generated for each Telefónica device that immunizes it against a possible attack.
The operator has tested this technology for customers in Spain and its goal is to continue collaborating with Idemia in updating the Quantum-Safe solution in various scenarios identified as critical, including improvements to consumer eSIM technology.
“We chose to work with Idemia on ‘post-quantum’ technology because we are a world leader in security solutions. Idemia’s International Mobile Subscriber Identifier (IMSI) encryption is a reliable evolution and advance in implementing the best possible privacy shield in new 5G networks and SIM cards ”, emphasized the head of digital services and mobile devices, Jose Ignatius Honorato.
