Many people feel a strange smell in Helsinki and other places in Niland during the afternoon on Sunday. Reports of the odor started trickling in around 2 p.m.
The Helsinki Rescue Service confirms that the authority has received reports of the smell from several sources.
“In Helsinki and Niland, people sometimes noticed a strong smell in the air. The Swedish Rescue Agency and other authorities are currently investigating the matter,” the authority wrote on X at 3 p.m.

Authorities investigating the smell also include Helsinki police, border guards, the meteorological institute and the Finnish Environment Agency. In a press release, the rescue agency wrote that border guards checked the Gulf of Finland while also being in contact with Estonian authorities, whose air quality was also unaffected.
One resident is said to have woken up to the smell at 7am. Fontanka writes: People have been feeling a strange smell for several days.
Investigate frantically
Residents reported the smell at least in Buchholmen, in the North Sea and in central Helsinki. The smell is described as sulfurous.
The rescue service reported that people felt the smell in a large area. For the knowledge of Habib Bank Limited, there were reports from Borja in the east to Karis in the west.
The smell had no effect on air quality, according to the Helsinki District Environmental Services. The smell should not pose any danger to the public, but if someone begins to feel unwell because of the smell, the rescue service recommends visiting the local health centre. In the press release, they also wrote that you should close the window and ventilation system if the smell inside becomes strong.
