It was clear last night that Labour had managed to reclaim electoral victory, meaning that the Conservatives' 14 years in power are now over.
Starmer met King Charles at lunch where he was formally asked if he wanted to form a government and he replied yes.
Shortly after 2.30pm Swedish time on Friday, he was greeted by cheers when, as is customary, he gave a speech outside 10 Downing Street in London.
There he began by thanking Rishi Sunak for his time in power.
“We recognise his determination and hard work as a leader,” Starmer said. “But our country has now voted for change.”
– Whether you vote Labour or not, I want to say straight away: my government will work for you. Politics can be a force for good, and we want to show that.
Rishi Sunak will step down as party leader.
Earlier on Friday, Rishi Sunak announced he would step down as leader of the Conservative Party in a farewell address to the nation.
– To the country, I want to say, I am sorry. I have heard your anger and disappointment and I take responsibility for this loss. He said: I will resign.
He also apologised to his party colleagues who are now leaving parliament.
Sunak is due to meet King Charles of Britain, as per tradition, to tender his resignation as prime minister.
