Local representatives told AFP that residents of the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong in the border area were asked to stay in their homes on Sunday.
A message sent to all residents said: “Gunfire is currently being heard from North Korea.”
“We advise residents to exercise caution when engaging in outdoor activities.”
Heavy artillery fire
According to the South Korean military, North Korea fired about 90 artillery shells north of Yeonpyeong over the course of just over an hour on Sunday afternoon local time (early morning Finnish time).
North Korea did not comment on the information related to the shooting on Sunday, but rather on the country's dictator Kim Jong Un An influential sister Kim Yoo Jung But he denies allegations that the country opened fire sharply near the border on Saturday.

South Korea dismissed North Korea's explanation as a piece of “vulgar, comedy-like propaganda.”
On Friday, residents of two South Korean islands near the border were ordered to leave their homes after North Korea fired about 200 artillery shells into the area.
