Fridges, shoes, needles, plastic – beaches along the coast of West Jutland are full of damaged goods and rubbish that washed ashore after a cargo ship dropped 46 containers overboard. In recent days, volunteers and beach guards have been working to clean the beaches, and on Wednesday bulldozers and trucks helped them move the trash.
Beach lifeguard Thomas Durlo He tells Danish broadcaster TV2 that the clean-up process could take a few days.
– We expect that what is there now can be quickly removed. Within a few days we expect it to disappear.
The shipping company bears responsibility
Last Friday, a ship belonging to the shipping company Mærsk dropped containers into the sea off the coast of Jutland when powerful Storm Pia moved over Denmark.
On Tuesday, beach rangers held a meeting with Maersk, which took charge of the cleanup.
– That is our responsibility. He said, “We are here until everything is cleaned and we are fully prepared to cover the costs that may be associated with the cleaning process.” Soren ThuanMaersk Safety Director after the meeting.
Mærsk has chartered a salvage ship that will sail around Skagerrak to try to locate and rescue containers that have not yet washed ashore.
Volunteer efforts
Many volunteers have previously contributed to collecting the lost goods and placing them in piles along the beaches.
– There were an incredible number of volunteers who helped. It was very helpful, Duurloo tells TV2.
Dorlo explains that once the stranded goods are collected, they will be sorted and sent for destruction.
Depending on prevailing conditions, additional cargo may wash up along the beaches in the coming days.
