‘Starfield’: The first gameplay scenes from Bethesda’s sci-fi role-playing game

When Todd Howard steps onto the stage, the gaming world is holding its breath: lead developer of cult studio Bethesda has already made a number of memorable appearances that are worth mentioning. On Sunday evening, he was once again in a good mood at Microsoft’s Xbox Show. He had his first “Starfield” gameplay scenes in his bags.

Bethesda’s upcoming role-playing and sci-fi game is one of the most anticipated video games of the past few years, but so far there hasn’t been any real game. In a fifteen-minute show, Bethesda and Howard bring down the curtain. The movie begins with a space-appropriate character cruising across the moon in the year 2330, sparking some space crawl. Plants are also examined, somewhat reminiscent of games like “No Man’s Sky”.

The similarities to “No Man’s Sky” don’t end there: Bethesda’s boss, Todd Howard, counts no less than 1,000 planets, all of which can be fully explored. Accordingly, the studio must have worked a lot with procedurally generated environments. Some places are handmade, of course: this includes the city of New Atlantis shown in the video. “Starfield” here is reminiscent of previous role-playing games Bethesda – with NPCs and missions apparently related to finding artifacts.

Immersion and role-playing are usually at the heart of Bethesda games, so Bethesda’s chief developer Todd Howard showed off the revised character builder. Finally, Howard announced that you can build your own outposts and hamlets like Fallout 4. Even spaceships can be freed in “Starfield”.

The corresponding editor, shown in the video, reveals different color combinations as well as different components. You will be able to fly fully built ships through the world of “Starfield”, in the cockpit you can participate in space battles with NPC pilots. Using a level system, Bethesda blends previous approaches: New skills can be unlocked with experience points before these skills are improved through use and challenges, as in “The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.”

Striking in the gameplay scenes: Technically, “Starfield” doesn’t necessarily look like the next generation, the graphics, facial animations, and action sequences in the NPCs look a bit dusty. Poetry and textiles have also been known to be prettier than other toys for years.

Bethesda has yet to announce an exact release date. In May, parent company Bethesda postponed the release originally scheduled for November to the first half of 2023. “Starfield” appears exclusively for the Xbox platform – meaning consoles and Windows PCs, which Microsoft also considers the Xbox platform. “Starfield,” one of the new “Bethesda” titles since the Microsoft acquisition, will no longer be playable on Playstation 5.

Starfield is Bethesda’s first true single-player RPG since The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Through a sci-fi game, Bethesda has established its third major role-playing world along with Elder Scrolls and Fallout. After the failure of Fallout 76, Bethesda is under special pressure to build on its old strengths once again.
