A strong earthquake hit northeastern Taiwan. The earthquake occurred in Yilan City shortly after 1:00 pm local time.

One person was reported injured.

According to the Taiwan Meteorological Authority, the earthquake measured 6.5 degrees, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) rated it at 6.2. The epicenter of the earthquake was 6.7 kilometers below the surface of the earth.

The woman who was injured by falling rocks in eastern Hualien during the earthquake was the only person known to have been injured. After the earthquake, her friends carried her from a mountain in the area which is popular with tourists.

There were no reports of serious damage. It is also not expected according to the Central Meteorological Service.

The public shouldn’t be too concerned, says Chen Ko Chang at the authority’s seismological center.

The subway system in Taipei City, located a few miles north, was closed as a precaution after the quake, but reopened about an hour later.

Taiwan experiences earthquakes on a regular basis, as the country is close to the joint between two Teutonic plates pressing against each other.
