Swede arrested in Poland – suspected of smuggling refugees

According to an Ekot correspondent on the ground in Poland, the Polish authorities announced at a press conference that several hundred migrants had been detained in Poland and returned to Belarus. The authorities also said that three people suspected of smuggling refugees, one of them a Swedish citizen, had been arrested. The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms the information.

– The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has learned that a Swedish man in his thirties, residing in Svealand, is being held in Poland, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes in an email and also announces that the Swedish Embassy in Warsaw is in contact with the local authorities in Poland.

The European Commission has said it believes around 2,000 migrants have gathered on the Belarusian side of the Polish-Belarus border in recent days. It is said that immigrants come from the Middle East in particular.

The Belarusian organizations are accused of collaborating with travel agencies in, among other places, Iraq, offering visas, airline tickets, hotels and transportation to the EU borders for thousands of kroner.

Several media outlets also reported that the Belarusian army escorted the migrants to the border and tried to push them to cross the border into Poland.
