To Mars in 45 Days: A Research Group Wants to Develop a New Kind of Propulsion – Space

Trips to Mars currently take more than half a year. A research group from Canada has developed a propulsion concept that can be used to reach Mars in just 45 days. Their concept is based on a giant, mobile laser that must be installed on the ground.

The technology required there can again be used directly, so it will be possible to launch several spaceships on Mars in a short time. So it is especially difficult to slow down on Mars, where there is no such laser. It will be necessary to perform a complex maneuver there, as the spacecraft brakes itself in the thin atmosphere.

Giant laser to facilitate the journey to Mars

In an article published in the specialist journal Acta Astronautica, a team from McGill University in Montreal explained that their technology will require building a laser of unprecedented size.

The first manned Mars missions are scheduled for the 2030s – but after that they’ll still be using already known technologies.
