TVN, Polsat, TV Puls and Kino Polska issued a joint statement about changing the broadcast standard for terrestrial television stations. The broadcasters wrote: “We will fight for the rights of viewers, as well as our rights, as Poland’s largest broadcasters, with the effects of these measures and demand appropriate compensation.”

Polish commercial broadcasters protest the preference for Polish television in the process of changing the frequency and broadcast standard. The topic has been discussed for months, but for the first time commercial broadcasters have appeared together and in public. The issue also has a political dimension – the opposition points out that favoring state television – which is in fact the propaganda wing of the Law and Justice Party – before the upcoming elections is an interference with the democratic process.

Below is the full text of the appeal:

“On June 27 the frequency and standard of terrestrial television broadcasting stations was changed – from DVB-T to DVB-T2. As a result of the decision of the Office of Electronic Communications, at the request of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, private television was treated differently from public television, which, unlike broadcasters Commercials, they do not have to switch to the new DVB-T2 broadcast standard.

This means that the process of reorganizing and changing the broadcast standard has been carried out in a way that differs significantly from the arrangements made in the past two years between broadcasters, UKE, KRRiT and the Ministry of Digitization. As a result, about 2.5 million viewers cannot receive publicly available channels such as Polsat, TVN, TV Puls, Kino Polska and many others.

We oppose unfair measures that deny a large percentage of terrestrial viewers access to their favorite channels and discriminate against all commercial broadcasters by favoring public television.

We will fight for the rights of viewers, as well as ours, as the largest broadcasters in Poland, with the effects of these actions, and demand appropriate compensation and the fastest possible conversion of TVP channels to the broadcasting standard applicable to other broadcasters.”

The statement was signed by TVN, Polsat, TV Puls and Kino Polska.
