Allowing Sweden to join NATO

Published on 2023-10-13 13.21

The NATO Swedish operation is ongoing and Sweden remains outside the military alliance.

Now Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is appealing to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to allow Sweden to join NATO.

– Our message is very clear: Please do what you promised by accepting Sweden’s application to join NATO, the Prime Minister tells the Aftonbladet newspaper.

The Swedish NATO operation has ended in limbo, awaiting approval from Türkiye and Hungary.

The latest announcement is that Türkiye will now accept the Swedish request in October. But it remains to be seen whether this is the case.

When Sweden gathers ten countries for a defense summit in Visby on Friday, Aftonbladet wonders what Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas will say to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding Sweden’s application to join NATO.

The call: “Do what you promised.”

Our message is very clear: please do what you promised by accepting Sweden’s application to join NATO. I think we are all waiting for this, and Sweden’s acceptance increases security for our region but also security for the entire NATO, Kaja Kallas tells Aftonbladet newspaper.

According to information contained in many media outlets, the patience of NATO countries, especially Turkey’s unwillingness to allow Sweden entry, is about to run out. Last Thursday, a meeting was held between NATO defense ministers where the Turkish minister promised to accept Sweden’s accession to NATO.
