Amazon and Apple fined for strict control over the sale of Beats headphones

The Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) has announced the imposition of a fine on Apple and Amazon. It is worth €203.2 million (about 955 million PLN) and relates to collusion to limit the sale of Beats-branded headphones by other entities in Italy.

According to this organization, both entities expired in 2018. An agreement under which official and unofficial Apple sellers cannot list Beats products on the Italian version of the site Amazon. Furthermore, the commercial giant has also been given the opportunity to independently select entities that can distribute and sell the headphones.

Such an agreement is a significant limitation in trade, because, according to AGCM data, as much as 70 percent. Electronics are sold in Italy via the Amazon platform, and at 40 percent. Sellers use this website as their primary source of income.

The bureau ordered the abolition of internal regulations between Apple and Amazon, as well as enabling the sale of equipment on a larger scale with the Beats logo. Both companies do not agree with the penalty and intend to appeal the Italian office’s decision.
