Apple Music Lossless will be available on HomePod and HomePod mini

Apple announced that there will be a software update in the future that will bring smart speakers HomePod and HomePod mini to support a new function of Apple Music. We are talking about the so-called non-missing formatting. This is lossless audio compression with up to 24 bits at 48 kHz. Toward the end of the year, 75 million songs of this quality will be presented.

However, Apple spokespeople cannot, of all things, reproduce that quality – at least not yet. This led to a lot of ridicule for Apple, especially since that’s not all. Apple Wireless Headphones also don’t support missing audio. This should change in the future for HomePods and HomePods mini. However, Apple has not revealed when the required software update will appear.

However, what’s not clear yet: Is two HomePods or Minis required for lossless audio playback or is one enough? The issue of whether the HomePod supports Dolby Atmos for audio playback is also not clear. Thumbnails will not be able to.

And Apple has finally made it clear that Beats and Apple’s Bluetooth headphones and speakers cannot play losslessly. That won’t change in the future either. AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Beats Wireless Headphones use the Bluetooth AAC codec – Bluetooth connections don’t support lost audio.

But what about Apple’s most expensive headphones? AirPods Max can be connected via bluetooth and cable. But even with this cable, no audio can be played without loss. Apple has now clarified: “Due to the analog-digital switching in the cable, playback will not be completely lossless.”

In addition, Apple Music 1 and music videos will not support the non-lost audio and anyone who was hoping at least that they could download their iTunes purchases again in non-lost formats was also wrong.

The missing version of Apple Music tracks is not yet available. This should only be the case with the release of iOS 14.6, which is currently in beta.
