Yesterday, Thursday, the government decided that the Border Guard will simplify the maintenance of border security at Finland’s external and internal borders between 8 and 15 July.

President of the Republic Sully Niinisto Hosts the visiting President of the United States Joe Biden In Finland and for a summit between Nordic leaders and the United States in Helsinki on July 13, 2023. Border controls will be temporarily re-imposed at Finland’s internal borders due to the visit. Internal borders refer to the borders between the Schengen countries.

Border control does not apply to all travellers, but is directed at the discretion of the authority.

Those crossing internal borders should prepare for border checks at border crossing points. The decision does not change the obligation to carry travel documents. Anyone moving within the Schengen area must hold a passport or identity card.

The Schengen area includes 27 countries in Europe that usually do not have border controls between them. Countries implementing the Schengen Agreement control the common external borders, which helps ensure security in the free movement area.
