After his recent victory in the Monaco Grand Prix, Sergio Perez has announced his aspirations for the Formula 1 championship. During the upcoming weekend in Baku, the Red Bull Racing driver has once again announced his readiness to fight for the top spots. While training for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the 32-year-old sometimes had a better pace than Charles Leclerc or Max Verstappen.
In the end, Leclerc took the lead in qualifying, but his lead over Perez was only 0.282 seconds. According to the Mexican, he had a chance to win the time trial, but engine problems at the end of the third quarter spoiled his dreams.
It wasn’t a perfect qualifier because at the end of the session we had an engine problem. We could not turn it on – Perez admitted in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

– We lost precious time in the garage, so I was the last to leave the track and I was alone. I couldn’t count on someone for my diagonal, which is very important on this track. Who knows if it will suffice in first place. However, we definitely lost by several tenths. “It doesn’t change the fact that Leclerc did a good lap,” added the Red Bull driver.
At a press conference later, Perez revealed that he needed to speak to a Red Bull mechanic about Saturday’s incident. – The car didn’t start, there must have been a misunderstanding. “We lost time, we went to the track quickly and it was hard for me to put together the perfect lap,” said the Mexican.
It may be a consolation for Sergio Perez that he had a better time than his teammate. Max Verstappen will be standing behind him at the start of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which is also a small problem for the “Red Bulls”, because the current Formula One world champion is the team leader from Milton Keynes.
