It’s about new rules
The confusion surrounding the performance of the Polish combination in Eugene was related to the new rules of this tournament. It assumes that coaches can only change one contestant from a team of four after the qualifiers.
– I knew about the new rules in the mixed relay race for more than two weeks. These rules state that each team will have the right to change only 25 percent of its composition from the qualifiers to the finals, meaning a player. In two conversations between me and the coach of the 4x400m relay team, Alexander Matusinski, I was informed and assured that he would only include me in the final of the medley. “He asked me to pass this information on to my coach so that we could determine preparations for the championship,” Kielbasinska wrote in a statement to journalists covering the World Championships in Eugene.
He said that such a result was not a surprise to him as he had not run the relay twice in a row in the past few years and fully accepted it.
– Then I heard from the coach that it was too much for me. “Yesterday, during the medley relay meet – after training – I suddenly heard that the coaching staff had found out that the World Federation had changed the rules so I would have to run in both heats of the 4x400m medley relay,” she continued.
Kiełbasińska has a tight schedule
She pointed out that she could only agree to one run as they had arranged so far, and told the coach how she would be ready for it a few hours before the start.
– At the World Championships, I will be in the individual 400m and the women’s 4x400m relay – qualifying rounds and finals. In four weeks we have the European Championships where I will run the 400m individual medley and hopefully the women’s 4x400m relay, which I have high expectations for as well. After I said that I will run only once in the mixed relay race, coach Matusinski decided this morning that I will not participate in this race – said Kielbasiska.
He stressed that he is sorry but respects the decision and wishes the entire team well.
The 4x400m medley will start at 20.45 Polish time. Poland will be joined by Kajedan Duszinski, Ika Baumgard-Witten, Karol Zalewski and Justyna Switty-Ersedic. This year Kiełbasińska took the second result from the women’s 400 m team – 50.28. A year ago, Poland in Tokyo won the Olympic gold medal in this event.
