Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the attack, which occurred on Monday night, targeted “facilities used by Iran-backed militias”. The attack was carried out by order of President Joe Biden.
“We condemn the US air strike at night on a site on the Iraqi-Syrian border, which is a flagrant and unacceptable violation of Iraqi sovereignty and Iraqi national security,” a statement from the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said.
The United States accuses armed factions backed by Iran of being behind attacks on American facilities in Iraq. Since the beginning of the year, it has witnessed more than 40 attacks on American targets and interests in Iraq, where the country’s soldiers are participating in an international coalition fighting the extremist Islamic State.
The US has not provided any information on whether anyone was killed in last night’s attack. But according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least seven militiamen were killed on the Syrian side of the border.
The Hashd al-Shaabi, an umbrella organization of Iraqi militias close to Iran, confirms the killing of militants and promises revenge.
