The case of Princess Latifa received international attention when the BBC released the videos, which were said to have been recorded in the summer of 2020, in February. The photo, which was first posted to two Instagram accounts, was not verified by the BBC. There is no location or date information in the posts’ metadata, but in the background is the announcement of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, which is currently showing in cinemas in the UAE.
A friend of the princess confirms to the BBC that she is cute in the photo and gets to know the other two women who are supposed to be the princess’s girlfriend.
In a text message to DN David Hay, co-founder of the “Free Latifa” group, confirms that several “potentially important and positive” steps have been taken with the aim of freeing Latifa, but he did not comment on the image itself.
Kenneth Roth, of Human Rights Watch, told the BBC that the photo says nothing about the circumstances surrounding her family or her freedom.
When the royal family invited former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, in 2018 to meet the princess for lunch, she stated in a video that Latifa “clearly has problems” and that “it is clear that she needs the medical help that she is receiving.” The statement was met with heavy criticism from human rights groups, which later led to an apology from Robinson, who said she had become Led by the princess family light.
