The case of Princess Latifa received international attention when the BBC released the videos, which were said to have been recorded in the summer of 2020, in February. In 2018, 35-year-old Latifa tried to escape from Dubai on a boat flying the American flag across the Indian Ocean, but she was then stopped by soldiers and returned to the emirate. Since then, she has not been seen in public.

When the royal family invited former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, in 2018 to meet the princess for lunch, she stated in a video that Latifa “clearly has problems” and that “it is clear that she needs the medical help that she is receiving.” The statement was met with heavy criticism from human rights groups, which later led to an apology from Robinson, who said she had become Led by the princess family light.
Dubai’s royal family has a former She claimed that the princess had mental problems. In February, the United Arab Emirates stated that the princess is being looked after at home and that media reports do not reflect the actual situation.
Her family confirmed that Her Highness receives care at home with the support of her family and specialized doctors. The UAE embassy in London wrote in a statement issued by the family, according to Reuters.
