League of Legends: Beginning of the 2022 Trailer Season

League of Legends: Beginning of the 2022 Trailer Season

International duels – meaning matches between teams from different regions – do not occur regularly in League of Legends due to Riot Games’ competitive system. One amusing effect of this is that fans from all regions constantly believe that the teams in their region are superior. On those rare occasions when international clashes do occur, there is often a rude awakening – especially for fans of Western teams, who are regularly overrun by teams from China and South Korea. Ironically, the effect still recurs every year because regional competitions rebuild the illusion of strength.
One of these reality check scenes is the Mid-Season Invitational, or MSI for short. This is where the 11 league champions recognized by Riot Games will collide to determine which region currently has the advantage over it. MSI will visit Busan, South Korea for the first time in 2022 and there will be only ten teams out of the eleven. The China Royal Never Give Up representative, who won the MSI title in 2018 and 2021, is allowed to compete from there due to the exceptional situation in Shanghai.

LoL MSI 2022 format and streams

First, teams compete against each other in three groups, and the winners and runners-up in each group receive a ticket to what is called the Rumble Stage. This is one free set for everyone. From this stage, four participants exit the final round. While the best 5 series is played in the qualifiers, the first two phases consist of the best singles games – this saves time and possibly increases the likelihood of surprises. After all, a losing team is more likely to win one game than to win three rounds against a superior opponent.

  • group stage May 10-15 2022
  • rumble stage May 20-24, 2022
  • qualifiers – 27-29 May 2022

The experience of the past few years puts China and South Korea on the list of candidates to win the MSI. Perhaps the lower latency conditions this year for all teams will be a deciding factor in allowing one of the underdogs to work hard – for example, G2 already won the cup in 2019 and has the experience to shine on the international stage. The stage of the first group, which is prepared as follows, will show whether there are difficulties in adapting to changing conditions:

  • Group A: DetonatioN FocusMe, Saigon Buffalo, T1, Team Aze
  • group b: PSG Talon, RED Canids, Royal Never Give Up, Istanbul Wildcats
  • group c: Evil Geniuses, G2 Esports und ORDER
