More than 70 fires were reported, Tuesday, in northern Algeria, ten of which engulfed Tizi Ouzou, the capital of the state of the same name. Several houses were burned and people were forced to flee from the flames.
It was said that 25 soldiers died while trying to save people.
“With great sadness, 25 soldiers were martyred after they succeeded in rescuing hundreds of residents from the fire,” President Abdelmadjid Tebboune wrote on Twitter.
Interior Minister Kamal Beljoud said several fires had broken out in the area and investigations had begun.
“Only criminals can stand behind the outbreak of about fifty fires simultaneously in several places,” he told Algerian television.
State radio reported that four “murderers” had been arrested in connection with the fires.
Prime Minister Ayman Ben Abdelrahman told Algerian television that Algeria has asked the outside world to help put out the fires and is in talks with other countries to charter a firefighting plan.
According to meteorologists, the temperature on Tuesday reached 46 degrees Celsius in the North African country, which is also suffering from water shortages.
