The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) holds a meeting on the situation in Ukraine, according to the Defense Alliance announcement In a press release. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday.

During the meeting, the foreign ministers of the member states of the NATO cooperation will discuss Russian military rearmament in and around Ukraine as well as broader security issues related to Europe. The meeting will be chaired by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and will be followed by a press conference.

Tensions between Russia and NATO countries escalated in the fall, after Russia massed some 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine. The United States has promised to retaliate with economic sanctions if Russia joins Ukraine, while Russia has demanded guarantees that Ukraine will not join NATO. Representatives of the United States and Russia are expected to meet on January 10 in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss the situation.
