Pension calculation is more convenient than in previous years due to the decrease in life expectancy. This does not mean, however, that everyone will benefit from the new schedules and will be able to count on a more favorable account of benefits.

Retirees submit requests to ZUS to recalculate their benefits in relation to the new life expectancy schedules. Most of these requests are unfounded and will lead to a refusal to transfer the pension. The Social Insurance Institute states that calculating the amount of the old-age pension is possible in strictly defined situations. This is possible, for example, when the pensioner works and pays pension contributions after the benefit is granted.

Life expectancy tables published by the Central Statistical Office are an essential element in calculating defined pensions according to the new rules. However, the current life expectancy schedules, which run from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, only apply to certain benefits.

Who is converting to

They are defined pensions according to the new rules for persons who meet the conditions for obtaining a retirement pension (particularly the retirement age requirement) between April 2021 and March of the next year, and for persons who have already fulfilled the specified pension conditions. According to the new rules, but only now in the period from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, they will apply for the determination of this old-age pension.

– This also applies to persons who have a fixed right to the so-called new old-age pension for periods subject to old-age and disability pension insurance after the date of granting the old-age pension and now submit an application for the so-called addition to the contributions restricted to the account of the insured after the date of establishing the right to an old-age pension. If such a request is made between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022, we will use the life expectancy from the current schedules when calculating the amount of additional contributions. Such an application can be submitted once a year or after the insurance has expired – explains Beata Kopczyńska, regional press spokesperson for the Social Insurance Institution in the Śląskie county.

ZUS will also apply current life schedules in the case of a person whose right to a new pension was established in previous years, but this right has been suspended due to continued employment with the employer with whom the applicant worked before the date of acquiring the right to an old-age pension and who will terminate his employment in the period from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. This person did not have the final fixed amount of the old-age pension, because this determination is made only after the employment relationship is terminated and the application for payment of benefits is submitted. Therefore, if an application for a retirement pension related to termination of employment is submitted from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, i.e. during the period of validity of the current life tables, then the amount of the pension will be calculated by ZUS using the tables applicable on the date of application and will be compared with the tables applicable on the day the applicant has reached retirement age, and we will select the option that is most suitable for the applicant.

Who is rejected?

However, ZUS receives requests to recalculate previous pensions in connection with new schedules from:
– Unemployed retirees from the so-called old system
Unemployed persons who have a pension from the so-called new system and have already benefited from its calculation according to various life expectancy scales.

The transfer will be rejected for those people who cannot use the new life expectancy tables.

According to the tables of the Central Bureau of Statistics, there was a decrease in life expectancy in all age groups. In this case, it is more convenient to calculate the amount of pensions than in previous years. This does not mean, however, that everyone will benefit from the new schedules and will be able to count on a more favorable account of benefits.
