On Wednesday, July 5, Prime Minister Ulf Christerson visited Washington, D.C., to meet with US President Joe Biden. The focus during the visit was Sweden’s NATO membership, but the two leaders also discussed other issues uniting Sweden and the United States such as the green transition, technology issues, support for Ukraine and transatlantic cooperation on China.
– This was a very good meeting for Sweden. President Biden has expressed very strong support for Sweden’s membership in NATO, and has indicated that Sweden will contribute to the security of the entire alliance. This means that we are seeking NATO membership for common defense after 200 years of non-alignment, but we are also seeking NATO membership because Sweden wants to participate and contribute, and we have the capabilities to join. No other country knows this better than the United States, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
NATO was the main focus of Wednesday’s meeting at the White House, ahead of the NATO summit in Vilnius next week. During the meeting, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and President Joe Biden discussed Sweden and the United States’ strong support for Ukraine. The conversation also touched on the USA and Sweden as close partners, leading democracies and two of the world’s most innovative countries with cooperation on issues such as climate and green jobs.
