Putin plans to attend the G20 summit in Bali

Putin plans to attend the G20 summit in Bali

US President Joe Biden and his advisers for talks on how to handle the G20 summit in November, as the meeting’s host country, Indonesia, received confirmation that Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to participate.

Biden had previously said that Russia should be kicked out of the G-20 and many in his administration were expelled from G-20 events when Russian delegates were present. But for Russia to lose its membership, consensus among the G-20 member states is required – something that does not exist, as China has been clear in its lack of support for such a proposal.

But White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has yet to make a decision on a US boycott of the summit.

– A lot could happen until then. But we have not yet seen any indication from Russia to engage in diplomatic talks in a constructive manner. Psaki told a news conference that our hope is that this changes – for diplomatic talks that are the only way to end this conflict and President Putin may end tomorrow – he can end it now.

Indonesia: “Don’t Let Divide”

But Jin Psaki also says she doesn’t want to anticipate events.

– The President publicly expressed his opposition to President Putin’s participation in the G-20. Ukrainians are welcome to participate – or invite them to participate. But six months left. We can’t predict now what it will look like then, Psaki says and also adds that they have spoken to Indonesia.

– We conveyed our opinion – that we do not believe that they (Russia, editor’s note) should be a part of it either publicly or privately.

According to Jane Psaki, the White House sees the invitation from Indonesia ended before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But Indonesian President Joko Widodo stressed in a statement on Friday his desire to unite member states.

Indonesia wants one of the G20. Don’t let that be a rift. Widodo said when he emphasized that Putin agreed that peace and stability are the key to the recovery and development of the global economy.

Widodo also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
