The government of the Balearic Islands allows many airlines to pay

The government of the Balearic Islands, which is also responsible for Germany’s favorite holiday island of Mallorca, has fined five airlines for not complying with Spanish law. Eurowings, Easyjet, Volotea, Ryanair and Vueling have been accused of charging passengers extra fees for hand luggage.

According to Spanish law, this is not allowed – accordingly, hand luggage up to a certain size must be carried free of charge by airlines. The investigations go back to an initiative of consumer protection organization Facua, which has sued Ryanair over its hand baggage regulations. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs then scanned the websites of other airlines to determine the regulations for hand luggage. According to the Mallorca Zeitung newspaper, “serious violations” of Spanish law were found.

It has also been criticized that the airlines in question did not set up any free hotlines for customers. Therefore it is not possible to contact the airlines to make complaints or problems. The binding notice that travelers may use a mediator in the event of a dispute is also missing on the Websites.
