This week, NATO foreign ministers met at NATO headquarters in Belgium to discuss Ukraine, among other things. Among other things, the ministers agreed to start a multi-year strategic support program for Ukraine.
– [När kriget slutar] We must make sure that President Putin cannot continue to undermine European security. We must enable Ukraine to deter and defend itself against future aggression, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday after the two-day meeting.
This support would mean multi-year investments in strengthening and transforming Ukraine’s Soviet-era defense into a modern Western defense. But it is also about building institutions and helping reset the norms and doctrines of a possible future membership in NATO.
– This is clear evidence that our support will continue for a long time to come. Stoltenberg said that NATO’s position is that Ukraine will become a member of the alliance.
According to Stoltenberg, supporting Ukraine is also in the security interests of NATO countries.
If President Putin wins in Ukraine, Stoltenberg said, it sends a dangerous message to authoritarian leaders around the world that they can achieve their goals by force.
Promote the two percent target
In 2014, NATO countries agreed to spend 2% of their combined economies on defence. For the NATO summit in Vilnius this summer, Jens Stoltenberg wants to reinforce that goal by setting two percent of gross domestic product as a defense spending minimum rather than a spending cap.
Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said: – In order to keep our citizens safe in an increasingly dangerous world, it is critical that we invest more in our defence.
