Sri Lanka: Protesters withdraw after resignation

A government official said he sent his resignation via email on Friday evening – a day later than he had promised. Early Friday morning, Parliament Speaker confirmed that Rajapaksa has resigned, according to the Associated Press.

But with a divided opposition and confusion reigning over who is responsible, a solution to the country’s many problems does not appear to be in sight despite Rajapaksa’s resignation. The president also provoked the masses by making the country’s prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, the acting leader.

Protesters are demanding more

Demonstrators are fighting for the politicians to leave and for a unity government to tackle the economic crisis that has caused widespread shortages of food, fuel and other necessities.

An assistant to the Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker stated that the Speaker of Parliament received the resignation of the President through the Sri Lankan Embassy in Singapore, but there was no immediate official announcement.
