Reading time: 2 minutes

NSAto Berrettini (ATP 7), opposing German Alexander Zverev (ATP 3), left Pala Albitor in Turin on Sunday evening. In front of his fans, the Italian had to throw in the towel at the start of the second set, with obvious abdominal injuries. The 25-year-old Romanian received the first set 7-6 (9/7) and was leading 1-0 in the second set in this match of the first day of the ATP Finals (hard), the masters at the end of the tennis season.

After a medical reprieve, Berrettini attempted to come back, but apparently unable to continue, he surrendered after a cross forehand down the hall. If he loses the rest of the tournament, he will be replaced by compatriot Yannick Sener, 10th in the world and first reserve.

At the start of the day, Daniil Medvedev, the second in the world and defending champion, got off to a good start defending his title. The Russian still needed three groups to take the Polish Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 9) gauge.

The green group will start on Monday with Novak Djokovic (ATP 1) – Casper Ruud (ATP 8) at 2pm, then Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 4) – Andrei Rublev (ATP 5) at 9pm.
