Hamburger SV has taken another step into the second-class boarding race. After good luck 1:1 (0:0) at Fortuna Dusseldorf on Saturday, the difference in the climbing standings was six points.

by Florian Neuhaus

The fact that the score was not seven points was again thanks to top scorer Robert Glatzel. The striker hit the final score with a header at the last second. The hamburger really didn’t deserve the point. Head coach Tim Walter’s side would probably have had the worst performance of the season and would have easily lost 0:3 or 0:4 if Fortuna had not used the massive usury of opportunity.

But as it were, poor aluminum and Glatzel helped HSV keep the dream of returning to the Bundesliga alive. As Werder Bremen and Darmstadt 98 battle each other in the evening, Walter’s men still play a catch-up match against Erzgebirge Aue on hand.

Glatzel’s top scorer: “Don’t give up under any circumstances”

“There was a lot missing and we just didn’t act the way we imagined,” Glatzel said. “But it’s positive that we were able to take that point today. And we are definitely not giving up.” Coach Walter explained, “We didn’t play well today, you have to say it clearly. However, the boys believed that until the last minute they could take something with them. It was absolute willpower – and with that we still had a point conquered.”

HSV can’t think of anything – especially not having a plan B

When classifying the result, we should not forget that in the Hamburg team, which on paper was practically the best lineup, some players reported only a few days before the duel. On the other hand, the pandemic recently hit Fortuna hard. And unlike HSV, they showed none of that at all. The hosts were supposed to be up front after only 15 minutes. But after Edgar Prieb’s free kick hit the post, Jordi de Wiggs was able to get past the ball as it rolled onto the goal line.

The guests Bumadej looked at their playing structure and lost the ball slightly over and over again. Plan B for the tactical requirement of always carrying the ball forward from your penalty area would have done well, at least on that day, as nothing was coherent in terms of play.

But Dusseldorf, where former HSV coach Daniel Theon came back on the bench and remained undefeated in Game Six, simply didn’t know what to do with the many calls for goals. Seconds before the break, Emmanuel Iwha once again failed at the post.

After changing sides – the same picture. But Hamburg stayed in the game because Dusseldorf missed one chance after another. And suddenly they were the ones who had a great opportunity to lead. Fortune goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier played the ball straight at David Kinsombi’s feet inside the penalty area. Putting it again in front of the goal – but not very accurately for the goal Glatzl (76). The opportunity was lost. Nine minutes later, the hosts celebrated their much-anticipated 1-0 result. Joker Adam Budzic, 36, scored a deliberate shot from the edge of the penalty area after a corner kick.

But the match wasn’t over yet and Glatzel had a chance to equalize before he even scored. But neither he nor Moritz Heyer could pass Kastenmeier (90). However, Glatzel (90 + 3) cheered at the end – at least one point.
