There was no strong against Camila Giorgi (WTA 71) in Montreal. The Italian has not lost a set in six matches. On the way, she rejected two great Czech women. In the third round, she eliminated Petra Kvitova. In Sunday’s final, she defeated Italian Karolina Pliskova 6:3, 7:5 (WTA 6).

In the first set, Giorgi scored four consecutive matches of 2: 3. In the second half, Pliskov tied 3-3 with a score of 1-3, but it did not change the course of this confrontation. In the twelfth match, the Italian won two match balls. I wasted the first with a failed comeback. In the second, the Czech girl put a forehand into the net. Giorgi could clench his fist in a gesture of victory.

Within an hour and 40 minutes, both players made six double faults. Giorgi sent seven aces and four Pliskova. The Italian scored 25 out of 35 points with her first pass. She had only been broken once, and had used four of the ten break points herself.

For Gorga, this is the third victory over Pliskova this year. Earlier, the Italian was the first in Eastbourne and at the Tokyo Olympics. In total, they played for the ninth time and their game balance is now 5-4 for the Czech women.

This was Pliskova’s third final this year and is still untitled. In Rome she lost 0:6, 0:6 with Iga Świątek, and at Wimbledon she lost in three sets to Ashley Barty. The last Czech victory was in January 2020 in Brisbane. The balance of all her singles finals on the WTA tour is now 16-16.

Giorgi was the first Italian woman in history to win a Canadian event held since 1892. She reached the finals of the tournament three times in Katowice (2014, 2015, 2016). On Sunday, she won the biggest title in professional courts. She previously won the championships in Den Bosch (2015) and Linz (2018). Giorgi has a tally in the finals 3-6.

The Italian won the title in Canada as the lowest ranked tennis player since Serena Williams, who triumphed in 2011 as the world’s 80th racket. Next Monday, Giorgi will be 34th in the standings.
