Identification of 4,000 bodies in Libya

Search efforts are still underway to find bodies in the mud and in the sea, while hope of finding survivors is fading.

According to the United Nations, up to 11,300 people may have died, something the Libyan Red Crescent denies.

– We were shocked when we saw our name with this number, says company spokesman Tawfiq Shukri to Agence France-Presse.

– This increases the confusion and anxiety of the families of the missing.

Last weekend, Storm Daniel caused massive flooding in the eastern parts of Libya. The collapse of two dams killed thousands in the Mediterranean city of Derna.

The World Health Organization is working with the authorities to meet the health needs of an estimated 35,000 people displaced from their homes by the disaster.

On Saturday, a second aid shipment weighing 29 tons arrived in the city of Benghazi in northern Libya. It contains, among other things, emergency care equipment and medicines as well as bags to be able to transport bodies for burial.

Authorities and relief organizations expressed concern about the spread of waterborne diseases, which could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the country.

“This is a disaster of epic proportions,” Ahmed Zouiten, the World Health Organization’s representative in Libya, said in a press statement.
