The clash between the two clubs that existed three days ago could have ended in at least three matches. Manchester failed, then quickly equalized and, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo, who was later awarded two penalties. The real thunder came when Lucas Fafiasky was beaten by a sensational long shot in front of Jesse Lingard and then, at the last minute, West Ham were awarded a penalty. Mark Noble entered the field especially for this occasion … and lost the fight with David de Gea!
In Wednesday’s match as part of the English League Cup, the pitch was completely different from what we saw on Sunday. The Red Devils still liked the second outfit though – after all, David Moyes also hired substitutes.
The hammer does not want to wait until it hits the hosts. From the start, they tried to attack from the right side and entered the penalty area … In the ninth minute Manchester’s sluggish defense fell for it. Ryan Fredericks netted for Alex Telles and ran towards the goal, from where he played unnoticed against Nemanja to Manuel Lancini. The latter was correct and unexpectedly the guests took the lead.
Despite the fact that not even a quarter of an hour had passed, West Ham – this time without Łukasz Fabiański, and between posts with Alphonse Aero – decided to retreat. The accusations of Ole Gunner Solkjer tried to use it but not the quality. Jadan Sanso and Anthony Martial continued to fail, Lingard proved to be a better alternative than the first choice, and it was as if Juan Mata had been left without a break for a while. Dornie van de Peek, still waiting for a real opportunity from the Norwegian coach, tried to show him, but his efforts were not enough.
French substitute Fabiuski Mayotti excelled on goal, while Jord Bowen and Andrzej Yarmolenko were dangerous in the absence of the excellent Michael Antonio. They do not have a good finish in the conditions created by Lancini and Co. There were some in the first half. The Red Devils took the initiative, but the crosses that eventually landed on the head of Cristiano Ronaldo or Edison Cavani did not go to the marshal who went wrong.
In the second half, Soulscare, who had not yet won trophies at Old Trafford, brought Greenwood and Fernandez into the game. In one of the first contacts the two had a chance to draw, but they were slightly wrong. Then the guests were already closed at thirty meters and focused on counter-attacks. Manchester dominated and fired four times, but the accuracy was very low.
In the 86th minute, Andrei Yarmolenko grabbed his head after defying all defenses, including the goalkeeper, and instead of pushing the ball into the empty goal, he hit the post. Moments later, Dean Henderson first won a head-to-head fight with Mark Noble, then with Bowen, who saved the skin of his teammates twice in the final minutes. They did everything they could to impose a fine, but could not equalize.
Manchester United are doing well in the league, but they have lost both of their matches in the Cup. He has already dropped out of the EFL Cup, and Ole Gunnar has said goodbye to another chance to win any trophy under the control of the Solskjaer Club.
