Sad news came to us from Italy. Egon Frank, Poland’s first Olympic champion in fencing, has died at the age of 86. He reached the top in 1964, when he was victorious in Tokyo.

The Tokyo Olympics were great for Egon Frank. In addition to the gold medal in the individual competitions, he also won the silver medal in the team competitions. His beautiful Olympic achievements were complemented by a bronze medal four years later in Mexico, as well as with his teammates.
Egon Frank also won eight World Championships medals: a gold in the Swords Championship (1962), two silvers on the chip team (1963 and 65) and five bronzes he won separately (1963) and in the team (1961, 1962, 1966, 1967).
In 1973, Egon Frank left for Italy with his wife, another famous florist – Elizabeth Cyberman-Frank. The first Polish Olympic champion in fencing lived on the Apennine Peninsula until the end of his life, but he loved to return to his hometown – Gliwice.
In Italy, he collaborated with the local federation, training fencers. He has done a good job in coaching as well as in his career. Many medalists in the Olympic Games and world championships have come out of his hand.
As reported by the Polish Fencing Association, Egon Frank was seriously ill. He passed away at the age of 86.
