Square Enix will be coming to Sony consoles with new carousel tactics later this year. This is great news.

A whole bunch of new games were announced in State of Play today. As a fan of turn-based strategy, I was particularly drawn to Square Enix’s The Diofield Chronicle. Because it looked like they wanted to give the PlayStation 5 its own Fire logo. The game will also be released on PlayStation 4.

I mean, there are a lot of hallmarks of Nintendo’s legacy here: fantasy anime empires with unpronounceable names in conflict? What about the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire, the Rowetale Alliance, and the Alletain Kingdom? Young hero characters with decorative armor? Join us! spears on board? Checks! Beautiful selfies confirm actions? sure of course!

There’s no 2D HD like in Triangle Strategy this time around – but there’s still a board game feel – right?

I wouldn’t call it a clone though, but Square Enix clearly feels that “something like Fire Emblem” should come to PlayStation.

Otherwise, he seems to come up with some ideas of his own. The cards seem to have square base units, as they look somewhat rectangular. But the characters don’t move completely “tiled”, at least that’s what it seems to me. It also looks like you’re moving in rounds, but it probably counts in units of time, because at some point I was able to figure out a lag value in a decimal place.

Relaxing strategic evenings seem to me.

Above all, it seemed great that instead of giving individual movement commands in a difficult way, different units were given orders together to advance to attack the enemies.

Then they break into the attack range as a group, where you can then choose the exact attack. Some of them are executed directly on the map or depicted in fantastic short animated sequences.

At least in terms of streaming, it appears to be quite independent. I’m curious as to what form this will take.

I also liked the style of the character models, even if the facial animations in the scenes look very mechanical. In general, it all sounds like a very serious drama – Fire Emblem breaks it a lot with youthful charm.

Let’s see how Square Enix ends up keeping it tonal. We won’t have to wait any longer. Diofield Chronicle will be released in 2022.
