In an interview with Alex McCarthy of talkSPORT, WWE star Mustafa Ali was asked about the 2019 Money in the Bank match, a match he was set to win before surprise contender Brock Lesnar knocked him out. According to Ali, he was originally supposed to win the match before he was told in advance of the actual plan.
Ali revealed ‘on the day she won it’. “Dude, this is my time. This is all I worked for. I can’t believe it, it’s awesome. The match is about to begin, and the entries are about to begin. And I might be wrong, but maybe Baron Corbin and I’m about to come in.
‘Then I’m called to go see the chief. ‘That’s what I want. Take the bag, shocked and frozen. That’s what I want.’ And you have to understand, right before you walk out the door, now is not the time to argue. You receive a direct command about what is expected of you. I know some people are like, ‘Well, why didn’t you just take the bag?’ I was more interested in taking the check that week. So I took the check that week.
A few years later, Ali views this moment with a bit of bitterness, as he does with most things related to his WWE struggles. He pretty much thinks fans are still talking about it, and without it fans wouldn’t have had Brock Lesnar’s short boombox era.
“At the end of the day, it’s not my show,” Ali said. “The guy who owns this, who writes this show, who decides what’s going to happen, gave me specific instructions and I said ‘okay’. Not a problem, boss. And I did exactly what he told me to do. I grabbed the bag, I was so shocked. I had froze you might say.” Then Brooke came out and did his job.
“In the end, it worked, didn’t it? People are still talking about this moment years later. Everyone is sad about it and it’s like ‘Guys, we have Brooke listening to the bag like it’s a bum box and he’s dancing.’ I gave it to you. I gave you this gift! MUST! I would like to have royalties on that shirt because it was wearing a boombox shirt.Technically, Mustafa Ali is the man who gave you such a wonderful gift.
