Police arrested Nicola Sturgeon

The arrest was made in connection with an investigation into the funding of the Scottish National Party. Sturgeon resigned as Prime Minister in February this year.

“A 52-year-old woman has been arrested today, Sunday 11 June 2023, on suspicion of connection to an ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party,” the Scottish Police wrote in a statement.

Sturgeon’s husband, former SNP leader Peter Morell, was arrested in connection with the same investigation in April. At the same time, former party treasurer Colin Beatty was arrested. The two men were later released pending investigation.

The investigation has been ongoing since 2021 and is linked to around £600,000 – just over SEK 8 million – collected by sympathizers. The money was supposed to be earmarked for use in a campaign for Scottish independence, but according to Sky News, it is suspected that the money may have been spent elsewhere.

Police earlier searched the homes of Nicola Sturgeon and Peter Morell as part of the investigation.

Nicola Sturgeon announced her resignation during a hastily recalled press conference in February of this year.

In my head and in my heart I know it’s time. The 52-year-old said at the press conference that this is true of me, my party and the country – and thus today I announce my intention to resign as Prime Minister and leader of my party.

Nicola Sturgeon took over as Head of Government in November 2014, when she also became Chair of the SDP Social Democratic Party.
