The Swiss legend is back in the game. Champions clash in Monte Carlo

Stan Wawrinka, returning from injury, lost to Kazakh Alexander Publik at the ATP Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo. The event will bring its winners Italian Fabio Focchini against the Greek Stephanos Ciccibas.

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 236) did not play until the end of the season after undergoing surgery on his left leg last March. A few weeks ago he played in Marbella (ATP Challenger) and lost to Elias Yamar. In Monte Carlo on Monday, he made his first appearance in the main series in 13 months. Alexander Public (ATP 36) is a former Third World World contender. Switzerland surrendered to Kazakhstan 6: 3, 5: 7, 2: 6.

In the first set, Wawrinka scored four in five games in a row 2: 2. In the second game, at 4: 5, he saved three sets of balls, but at 5: 6 he gave up the pass. Public ruled in the decisive edition, scoring two breaks and returning to 5: 1. The Swiss fought to the end. He chased down the match ball and used his break point in the seventh game. However, after a while, he lost his service and ended up participating in the tournament.

In a two-hour, seven-minute game, Public made 14 aces and 11 double faults. In his first pass, he scored 35 points out of 42. Kazak gave up three passes and used five of his 11 chances.

Wawrinka has won three Grand Slam tournaments. He won his biggest scales at the Australian Open 2014, Roland Karosi 2015 and the US Open 2016. Won a total of 16 singles titles in the main series. He once won a tournament in Monte Carlo (2014).

Fabio Fognini (ATP 32) defeated Arthur Rinderkneck 7: 5, 4: 6, 6: 3 (ATP 59). In two hours and 29 minutes of play, Italy conceded four passes and used five of 13 break points on their own. He won in 2019 in Monte Carlo. Another contender for the former Seventh World Singles player is defensive Greek Stephanos Tsitsipas.

Federico Delfonis (ATP 34) won Jaume Munara (ATP 105) 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 4 after two hours and 26 minutes. Both tennis players had 11 break points and five breaks. Argentina face Alexander Sverre in the second round with two points (96-94) more than Spain.

Diego Swartzman (ATP 16) won 6: 7 (5), 6: 3, 6: 3 Karen Khachanov (ATP 24). Argentina have crossed four times and hit seven breaks on their own. The meeting lasted three hours and seven minutes. Albert Ramos (ATP 37) won 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 2 after Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 58) won by two hours and 29 minutes. Both tennis players had nine break points. The Spaniard has lost three times and scored five breaks himself.

Sebastian Corda (ATP 42) defeated Botic van de Zandschulp (ATP 41) 7: 5, 6: 4. In the 10th game of the first set, the American defended the set ball. In 97 minutes he blasted five aces and scored five of seven break points. In the second round, Corta will face Carlos Alcaras, the reigning champion in Miami.
