The statement was interpreted as an indication that DeSantis is step by step trying to paint his rival, former President Donald Trump, as unelectable if convicted of the crimes he is accused of committing.

He supported Trump
According to US polls, DeSantis is ranked second, and perhaps third, behind Donald Trump in the race to become the Republican presidential nominee for the 2024 elections. He is far behind the former president.
Trump has been indicted on four counts related to attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The crimes are described, among other things, as a conspiracy.
DeSantis has previously sided with Trump and his staff when they argued that criminal investigations were politically motivated. The Florida governor also joined a majority of other Republican hopefuls during last month’s debate in declaring that they would support Trump if he is convicted in upcoming trials.
Trump Crew: Record low
In the interview broadcast on CBS on Wednesday night, DeSantis criticized Trump (and current President Joe Biden) for the sharp increase in the US national debt during their terms.
The Trump camp reacted quickly.
“DeSantis knows he has no chance of being the nominee at all — he’s down to third place — but his ingratiation with Trump supporters and crazy Democrats is at an all-time low, almost as good as his poll numbers,” salutes a Trump campaign spokesman. Stephen Cheung in a statement.
However, no comment was made on the US national debt.
The four-point indictment relates to Trump’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, and described the crimes as a conspiracy, among other things.
“The purpose of the conspiracy was to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election by intentionally using false claims of election fraud,” the 45-page indictment said.
According to the indictment, Trump allegedly attempted to alter the results after the 2020 presidential election in his favor. It culminated in the storming of the Capitol building on January 6, 2021. But before that, Trump reportedly tried to influence, among other things, election workers and elected officials in several states.
Special Prosecutor Jack Smith says the storming of the Capitol was carried out by Trump supporters motivated by his lies about election fraud. Inside the building, Congress was about to formally nominate Democrat Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election when Trump supporters came forward.
Several conspirators are named in the indictment, but not by name because they are not accused of any crimes.
