WhatsApp will remind users that their chats have end-to-end encryption

Madrid, 3 (Portaltic / EP)

WhatsApp is working on a footer notification reminding users that their conversations within the instant messaging app are protected by end-to-end encryption.

End-to-end encryption is a security mechanism by which only the sender and receiver can access the information being exchanged. This method has become popular over time, to prevent unauthorized third parties from accessing the information being shared, and it has been around since 2016 on WhatsApp.

The app first integrated this protection into its text chats, and since then, it’s also rolling it out in its voice and video calls, as well as its states and backups.

Participants in the Google Play test program in the new update 2.22.10.14 of WhatsApp for Android beta detected the appearance of a warning reminiscent of end-to-end encryption in conversations, according to media specialist WaBetaInfo.

The notification will appear at the bottom of open conversations on WhatsApp, on the Chats page, to make it clear that even the company itself will not be able to access these encrypted messages. In a previous update, the notification was introduced in the call log.

The update is only available on Android. However, the media confirms that WhatsApp is already working on implementing it in the beta version of the desktop version and in the iOS ecosystem.
