MEXICO CITY (apro). – As part of the “grain of sand” in the cultural revitalization in the north of the country, the classical operas I Capuleti and I Montecchi (Capuletos y Montescos) were announced by the effort of independent workers and promoters with performances on July 23 and 24 and at 40% capacity in San Pedro Auditorium, In Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.
The play produced by MOS México Ópera Studio – the play directed by Reinier Pinheiro and musically directed by Alejandro Miyake – is based on the political and social context of the families of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Julieta characters; It will be performed in two works, and was written by Felice Romani for the famous Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini in 1830.
According to production information, “The Book of Roma, on which Bellini based this title, has its roots in the original Italian sources of the history of the sixteenth century, with a short story by Matteo Bandello of the Le collection having a special connection. The novel of 1554, on young lovers.”
I Capuleti and I Montecchi will have a limited capacity of 40% which equals about 400 seats, with general prices ranging from $100 to $600 pesos at the San Pedro Auditorium box office or at Arena Ticket.
The opera, which seeks plastic references and current female symbols, but seeks respect for the original score, has female singers in its main characters, along with “Romeo” Mezzo Mariana Sofia and Daniela Cortes, and “Julieta” to sopranos Fernanda Allande and Diana Rojas, who are considered, According to Reinier Pinheiro, clear signs of Bel Canto:
The choice of Romeo to be a woman, an indication of the result itself, is connected with an inherent characteristic of early Belle Canto, before the Romanticism to which this opera belongs, in which it was common to defend a character like Romeo by Mezzo soprano, the dialogue between a tessitura, Julieta is a soprano and Romeo Mezzo”.
On the visual details of the work, Pinheiro said:
From the point of view of staging, it contains three or four primary spaces, decorated with the process of digital scenography and direct projection, in a closed-circuit fashion directed by the performers themselves. The costumes and some contemporary elements refer to the street, square or alley of the present city, to contemporary Verona in shades of symbolic Mexico Or Latin America, with a space for graffiti, where the Capulets and Montagues face each other over the supremacy of some city, or Verona to be burning directly, says the text.”
While music director Alejandro Miyake commented on the effort and technique required for the singers:
“This opera, like all Bel Canto operas, requires and demands from the singers a high level of vocal technique and music, which is why we take these standards so that the singers under MOS are directed to develop these two aspects and take them to their highest levels. As directors we have the advantage of polishing opera and work On them early on, this production began its acoustic study, since the end of January of this year, allowing us to work and refine both interpretive and vocal interpretation.
“In addition to these artistic musical aspects, the difficult thing about Bellini is how the drama contrasts with the music, oftentimes the drama is more intense than the music, so the most difficult thing for the performers is to keep the style and calm. Very, but to give the intensity of the emotion that the text evokes so much, it’s like asking them to look like they’re going at high speed but do it in slow motion.”
In the play “Capellio”, Carlos Adrian Hernandez-Herrera will play Giulietta’s father. Giulietta, promised by “Teobaldo”, will be directed by Manuel Davalos and Diego Garza, “Lorenzo”, Giulietta’s doctor and acquaintance, Victor Rodrigo. Also in a marked difference from Shakespeare’s history, Romeo inadvertently killed Capellio’s son (Julieta’s brother) in battle.
Theater scenography is responsible for Daniela Areola and Reinier Pinheiro, digital scenography (video maps) by Dewi Ramirez, wardrobe curation for Francisco de Luna, lighting design for Pepe Cristerna.
Founded in 2019 as a high-performance center for artistic and interpretive improvement for emerging singers and pianists, the MOS México Ópera studio has so far has four operas on stage. Among her creative body, in addition to Pinheiro and Miyake, is the famous soprano Maria Katzarava as the voice director, and in the production coordination, Patricia Perez.
